The Goodyear Police Department has been awarded funding through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

The department was selected to recive a  $65,000 grant for the 2024-25 fiscal year with funding provided through the DUI Abatement Council. The grant will support efforts to address impaired driving and improve road safety in the area.

The grant will be used to fund overtime for DUI enforcement, public education events, and the “Know Your Limit” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the risks of impaired driving. These efforts are intended to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries related to impaired driving.

Goodyear Police officers will participate in DUI Task Force operations as part of the grant. These operations will focus on impaired driving enforcement, public safety, and enhancing visibility to deter driving under the influence.

In addition to the DUI-related funding, the Goodyear Police Department has received $122,816 in federal funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety through five separate grants for the 2024-25 fiscal year. These grants will support various traffic safety initiatives, including:

• $11,810 for Accident Investigation Overtime, professional services, and specialized training through the Institute of Police Technology and Management.
• $36,000 for DUI and Impaired Driver Enforcement overtime, which will support participation in DUI Task Force events and operations.
• $20,000 for Distracted Driving enforcement, funding targeted operations to address distracted driving and increase public awareness of the issue.
• $25,006 for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Enforcement, which will support efforts to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists through enforcement and educational programs.
• $30,000 to enhance the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), which focuses on public awareness and enforcement of issues such as speeding, aggressive driving, and school zone safety.

The Goodyear Police Department also is involved in the Drug Recognition Expert  Program, with a Goodyear traffic enforcement officer serving as the West Valley Coordinator for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. This program focuses on training law enforcement officers to identify drivers impaired by drugs.

These initiatives align with the Arizona Highway Safety Plan, which aims to reduce traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities through data-driven strategies and collaboration among state agencies, local law enforcement, and community organizations.

The GOHS provides funding to support the development of traffic safety programs, with the goal of establishing effective long-term solutions to traffic-related issues. The grants awarded to the Goodyear Police Department are part of a broader effort to enhance traffic safety across Arizona.
