As New Year’s Eve approaches, state and local authorities are reminding the public of fireworks regulations designed to prevent injuries and property damage during the holiday season.
In 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that 9,700 people were treated in emergency rooms nationwide for firework-related injuries.
Under Arizona's Revised Statutes, fireworks can be discharged in Maricopa County between Dec. 26 and Jan. 4. However, certain types of fireworks, such as aerial fireworks that rise into the air and explode, are prohibited for consumer use throughout the county. These fireworks may only be used in approved public displays.
Fireworks may not be discharged between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m., with an exception for New Year’s Eve, when they can be used until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1. While handheld and other ground-based fireworks are permitted, users are urged to exercise caution and follow the designated hours of use.
In Goodyear, the regulations align with those set by the state, but with an additional note: individuals responsible for causing an emergency response due to improper firework use may be required to cover the costs of fire department or emergency services.
