Abrazo West Campus has added a robotic surgical system designed to assist with joint replacement procedures, the hospital announced.
The Mako 4 SmartRobotics system will be used for total and partial knee replacements, total hip replacements and some revision procedures using computer-assisted guidance. Hospital officials said the system represents an investment of about $870,000 and may support total shoulder procedures when that capability becomes available.
According to the hospital, the platform uses imaging and data to help surgeons plan procedures and guide instruments during surgery.
Lawrence D’Amico, Abrazo Health’s chief strategy officer said the system allows for more individualized surgical planning.
“This investment reinforces a commitment to meeting the growing needs of patients across the West Valley with advanced technology, greater surgical precision, and more personalized orthopedic care,” she said.
Demand for joint replacement procedures is expected to grow in the coming years, with some studies indicating a portion of patients report dissatisfaction following conventional surgery.
D’Amico said the addition is part of efforts to expand surgical services in the West Valley.
