Rotary club promotes literacy

School buses in the Avondale and Litchfield Elementary School Districts are now displaying signs encouraging daily reading.

The Goodyear Pebble Creek Rotary Club has installed signs on 75 buses with the message, "Read 20 Minutes a Day to Your Child," in English and Spanish. Each sign features an image of a parent reading to children.

The GYPC Rotary Club is made up of local leaders providing community service. The GYPC location is providing this community support by promoting early childhood literacy.

"Reading to a child can open their world and create lasting memories,” said Rotary Club and Foundation President Patrick Doland.

In addition to the bus signs, the GYPC Rotary Club is placing Little Lending Libraries in Avondale, Goodyear, and Litchfield Park, promoting a community book exchange and is affiliated with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to children up to age five.

“I am grateful for the community-wide efforts to support early childhood literacy. The families and children of the Litchfield Elementary School District will benefit greatly from the dedication of partners like the GYPC and our staff, as we work to remove barriers to reading and getting books into the hands of our youngest learners,” said Dr. Carter Davidson, Superintendent Litchfield Elementary School District.

The GYPC Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 7 a.m. in Pebble Creek, Goodyear.
