Litchfield museum seeks volunteers

Posted

The P.W. Litchfield Heritage Center is inviting local residents to get involved in preserving the history and culture of the Southwest Valley through a volunteer orientation event on Saturday, July 26, at 10 a.m.

The orientation will take place at the museum, located at 13912 W. Camelback Road, and is open to anyone interested in contributing their time and skills to support the center’s educational and cultural programming.

“Volunteering with us is an enriching experience,” according to a center announcement. “Our mission centers around bringing people together through the unique history of the Southwest Valley while highlighting local arts and culture.”

Executive Director Lisa Hegarty said the orientation will introduce attendees to the museum’s mission, ongoing projects, and the many roles volunteers play in its operations.

“This work wouldn’t be possible without our members and volunteers. They are absolutely essential to our daily operations and future growth,” Hegarty said.

The center showcases the stories of early pioneer families and the development of historic communities like Goodyear, Avondale, Tolleson, Liberty, Cashion, Waddell, and Litchfield Park. Its exhibits also explore the lasting influence of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. on the area’s agricultural and aerospace history.

Volunteers are needed across several departments, with opportunities to suit a wide range of interests and time commitments, starting at under three hours a week.

Education volunteers can serve as docents, welcoming visitors and interpreting exhibits. The center also seeks help with school presentations, family programming, and curriculum development for K-12 classrooms.

Those interested in communications or creative work can support the museum by writing newsletter articles, creating promotional materials, managing social media campaigns, or helping with graphic design. Volunteers are also needed to take photographs, shoot and edit video, and assist with website maintenance.

For those interested in research and preservation, the center offers roles focused on oral history collection, transcription, and archival projects. Administrative support is also needed for tasks like newsletter mailings and event logistics.

Event volunteers help plan and host programs such as lectures, book clubs, and cultural festivals. Responsibilities can include staffing booths, leading small group activities, managing registration, or assisting with setup and cleanup.

Fundraising volunteers help organize events like the annual Litchfield Park Home Tour and work behind the scenes to strengthen donor engagement and outreach.

“We’ll walk you through the different opportunities and help you find the best fit,” said Hegarty. “I encourage you to stop by and check (it) out. We have lots of stuff going on at our museum. At our organization there really is something for everyone.”

No prior experience is required, and training will be provided. Attendees will also have the chance to meet staff and current volunteers and fill out interest forms.

The center is currently open Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. and will resume extended hours in the fall. Visit pwlhc.org for more information.
