Litchfield elementary district prepares to name newest school

Posted

The Litchfield Elementary School District will meet Tuesday, Dec. 10, to discuss the development of its newest school at Perryville Road and Glendale  Avenue that is set to open in August 2026.

During the Dec. 10 meeting the governing board is beginning the process of naming the new school.

Two potential names are under consideration:

  • Jonathan L. Rayner Elementary – Rayner played a role in the early history of the district, circulating petitions to establish Litchfield School in 1917. He also served as the school’s student transporter, janitor, and purchased supplies to help get the school started. The Rayner family has been a supporter of education in the West Valley, with many family members attending schools in the district over the years.
  •  Major Troy Gilbert Elementary – Gilbert, a West Valley native, was stationed at Luke Air Force Base and deployed to Iraq in 2006, where he gave his life in service to his country, saving the lives of 19 Special Forces operators. Gilbert’s children attended Corte Sierra Elementary School, and his legacy of service and sacrifice is recognized by many in the community.

The district is inviting community input on the potential names, seeking to reflect local history and values.

To district officials, school names are more than just labels. They help shape a school’s cultural identity by honoring local history, fostering community pride, and inspiring students.
