Liberty district to host open house for new school

Posted

The Liberty Elementary School District will host an open house for its newest school, Loretta Zumbro Elementary, 9-11 a.m. Saturday, April 5 at 18304 W. Lower Buckeye Road.

The event will include guided tours of two buildings, and school registration information will be available.

Set to open in August 2025, the K-8 school will accommodate about 850 students. To prepare for its opening, the district adjusted attendance boundaries, shifting some students from Blue Horizon, Liberty, and Las Brisas Academy campuses.

"We are so excited about our inaugural year for PreK-6 students beginning this coming August," stated Bruce Nieminski Loretta Zumbro's principal. "I will work to ensure that Loretta Zumbro Elementary School will support the academic and social needs of our students."

The school will open with grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2025-26 school year, adding seventh grade in 2026-27 and eighth grade in 2027-28.

The 73,512-square-foot school is being built at the northwest corner of Lower Buckeye Road and South 183rd Avenue to accommodate increasing enrollment and residential growth in the district. The Goodyear City Council approved the annexation of the 16.25-acre site in September, allowing the district to proceed with construction.

“Our plan is to open the school in August 2025, which means construction had to start in September,” said LESD Superintendent Dr. Cort Monroe.

The school will offer programs including agriculture, performing arts, dual language, career preparation, leadership, International Baccalaureate, and a STEAM curriculum integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

Loretta Zumbro Elementary is named in honor of Loretta Zumbro, a longtime Liberty district educator who spent 38 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic director.
