Goodyear wins national safety award

Posted

The City of Goodyear's Public Works Department has been awarded the prestigious Best Safety Training Program Award at the Solid Waste Association of North America’s 2024 conference.

At the core of the department’s safety initiatives is a program where every employee is trained and authorized to act as a safety officer. This policy allows staff members working alongside contractors to stop work if unsafe conditions are identified, ensuring immediate action is taken to address potential hazards.

"This recognition highlights our team's unwavering commitment to prioritizing the well-being of our employees,” said Goodyear Public Works Director Sumeet Mohan. “By effectively implementing our comprehensive safety, health and wellness programs, we have reduced health risks and enhanced the overallquality of life for our workforce.”

SWANA's annual awards celebrate achievements in various aspects of the solid waste industry, with a particular focus on safety and innovation.

The SWANA organization has a mission of advancing the waste management field through education, advocacy, and research. Its annual conference serves as a platform for industry professionals to exchange best practices and recognize outstanding contributions to the field.

In addition to safety, Goodyear's Public Works Department provides essential services to residents, including trash and recycling collection, street maintenance, and fleet services. The department’s solid waste division oversees tasks such as mandated inspections, bulk collections, and enhanced recycling programs, while the streets maintenance division works to preserve the city’s infrastructure.
