West Valley shelter begins renovations on suites for domestic violence survivors

Posted

New Life Center, one of Arizona’s largest domestic violence shelters, has begun construction on new single suites designed to provide customized support for survivors.

Previously, individuals arriving alone stayed in casitas intended for families. The new suites will optimize shelter capacity while ensuring that each survivor receives personalized care and space.

The renovations repurpose a long-standing building that previously housed direct service staff. Those employees have moved into the shelter’s clubhouse, which offers a library, teen center, schoolwork spaces, and a new suite for mothers and babies.

“We are beyond thrilled to get our single suite projects underway and create spaces where survivors can feel safe and have a place to relax while getting the help they need,” said Kate Thoene, interim CEO at New Life Center. “This couldn’t have been made possible without our generous donors and community partners, and we are incredibly grateful for each of them.”

The $820,000 project is funded by grants from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Thunderbirds Charities, BHHS Legacy Foundation, and the Del E. Webb Foundation.

New Life Center provides services to survivors of all backgrounds in the West Valley and across Maricopa County.

Its emergency shelter aims to offer safety and meet the urgent needs of those fleeing domestic violence. Survivors staying in the new suites will have access to advocacy and case management, trauma treatment, group and individual therapy, and other resources.

The organization follows trauma-informed practices to support survivors in healing from violence and abuse.
