Crews are removing invasive tamarisk plants at Estrella Mountain Regional Park, temporarily closing the El Rio parking lot through Dec. 31, park officials said. The park itself remains open to visitors.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, tamarisk, or saltcedar, can alter wildlife habitat, increase water use in floodplains and contribute to more frequent wildfires.
Workers are using chainsaws, wood chippers and herbicide to clear the invasive shrub. Visitors are asked to avoid the marked work zone for safety.
Estrella Mountain Regional Park is located at 14805 W. Vineyard Ave. in Goodyear.
