The Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission is set to host a series of lectures featuring prominent art leaders from across the Valley, continuing with "The Art of Storm Chasing."
The 2024 Hot Coffee Lecture Series takes place on the last Tuesday of each month at Goodyear City Hall, located at 1900 North Civic Square. Each session will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m., offering residents an opportunity to connect with the arts and culture community.
Established in 2006 by the Goodyear City Council, the Arts and Culture Division aims to enhance the city’s cultural landscape by integrating art into public spaces. The manages the city's public art program and collaborates with the private sector and other governmental agencies to promote arts and cultural excellence.
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the series will feature Emmy award-winning storm photographer Mike Olbinski, who will present "The Art of Storm Chasing." With nearly 14 years of experience capturing severe weather, Olbinski has turned his passion for storms into a remarkable career. "I’ve loved the weather since I was a kid. As I grew up, I wanted to learn more about it," stated Olbinski.
His lecture will explore the beauty and power of storms through photography and time-lapse video. Olbinski will also discuss his various storm-chasing workshops and tours, which he has developed over the years.
"Teaching people about weather and showing them the power of storms has been one of my favorite things to do," stated Olbinski. On his website, Olbinski offers a range of education options, including relaxed monsoon workshops, intensive tornado chase tours in the Central Plains, and personalized virtual sessions.
"I can’t help but chase storms," stated Olbinski. "The gasps, the tears, the euphoria, witnessing those reactions is so rewarding."
Residents and art enthusiasts are encouraged to attend the lecture series to learn more about the contributions of local artists and engage with the community.
