Evening scorpion walk planned at Estrella Mountain Regional Park.

Families and nature enthusiasts are invited to take part in a Scorpion Safari walk Friday, Aug. 22, at Estrella Mountain Regional Park’s Gila Trail. The guided program will be offered in two sessions, from 7 to 8 p.m. and 8 to 9 p.m.
Led by a park ranger, the walk gives participants the chance to look for and learn about several species of native scorpions, including bark, striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions. Other nocturnal wildlife such as bats, owls, tarantulas, kangaroo rats and insects may also be spotted along the way.
The walk takes place on Gila Trail, a half-mile barrier-free loop made of compacted dirt with no obstacles. The level terrain is suitable for strollers and those who prefer a stable walking surface.
Participants are encouraged to bring a blacklight to help locate scorpions and a regular flashlight for observing other desert wildlife. Closed-toe shoes and water are recommended. Pets are not permitted on the walk.
Restrooms and water are available at the park’s Nature Center and picnic area, with a portable restroom located at the trailhead. Parking requires either a $7 cash payment at the self-pay station or a valid annual pass.
Space is limited and registration is required. Attendees must select a preferred session time when registering.
Officials caution that outdoor summer programs may be canceled with little notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat. The most current program information is available at maricopa.gov/parks.
The Scorpion Safari will meet at the Gila Trailhead inside Estrella Mountain Regional Park, 14805 W. Vineyard Ave. in Goodyear.
