OPINION — At the March 30 Dysart Governing Board meeting, something didn’t sit right with me. Current board President Steve Skvara is now leading the charge to place another bond on the ballot this November, despite voting against the last one.
Let me be clear: Dysart needs a bond to pass. Our district is growing rapidly, especially near 163rd Avenue, and we need new schools to keep up with that growth. We also need updated buses, reliable air-conditioning systems and funding for essential capital improvements that directly impact student safety and learning environments.
But the proposal put forward by Skvara raises serious concerns. Notably, it does not include funding for buses, which are desperately needed across the district. That omission alone suggests a lack of thoughtful planning. When you combine that with the sudden shift in position, it’s fair to ask: What changed?
For those of us who have followed the board for some time, this reversal is difficult to ignore. Leadership requires consistency, transparency and a clear commitment to students. When a board president argues with legal counsel and has a track record of voting against measures tied to student safety, it becomes harder to take a sudden change of direction at face value.
Our community deserves answers. Why the change of heart? Why put forward a proposal that appears incomplete? And most importantly, how can we trust that this bond if passed truly will address the district’s most pressing needs?
Many Dysart families are willing to support investments in our schools. But that support must be earned through responsible leadership, careful planning and a genuine focus on what is best for students, not politics or personal agendas.
