The Georgia T. Lord Library will host a free lecture, “The Baroque and the Bauhaus: Art Movements that Influenced Architecture & Design.”
The Baroque period, emerging in 17th-century Europe, is known for its ornate detail, grandeur and dramatic use of light and space in both art and architecture. The Bauhaus, founded in Germany in the early 20th century, emphasized simplicity, function and modern materials, influencing everything from furniture to city planning.
Phoenix Art Museum docent Dawn Van Scoik will lead the discussion, exploring how two very different movements left lasting marks on architecture and design. Van Scolik will hold the discussion 1p.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 1900 N. Civic Square, in the Community Room.
Van Scoik, who holds a BFA in interior design, has focused her career on sustainability and the intersection of urban agriculture, design and the built environment. The program is part of the library’s ongoing art lecture series presented by Phoenix Art Museum docents.
