Modern Grind switches roasters, committing to local values

Posted

Modern Grind, a locally owned coffee and tea shop, has announced a new partnership with Phoenix-based Clay Coffee Company as its primary coffee bean supplier.

The change comes after Modern Grind’s previous coffee supplier was acquired by another local company. Owner Daphnie Kelly said the switch was motivated by a desire to stay true to the shop’s hyper-local sourcing values.

“We loved our previous supplier and all the folks who remain working there are roasting amazing coffee, but they recently were bought out by another larger company… so we need to stay true to our values,” said Daphnie Kelly, the owner of Modern Grind.

Clay Coffee Co. was founded by the family of Clayton Townsend, a Salt River Police Department officer who was killed during a traffic stop in Scottsdale on Jan. 8, 2019. His brother, Cole Townsend, launched the coffee business in his memory. The company has since grown into a micro-roastery sourcing organic and fair-trade beans from regions including Guatemala, Brazil, Ethiopia and Colombia.

“Our goal is to share our love and appreciation for coffee with our community. We hope to leave an impression and inspire you to cherish your loved ones, pursue your passions, and enjoy every cup to the fullest,” said Townsend, family owner of Clay Coffee Co.

A portion of Clay Coffee Co.’s profits are donated to the 100 Club of Arizona, a nonprofit that supports families of injured or fallen first responders.

Modern Grind, which offers drinks, wellness products, and snacks, also supports local teachers, military service members, and first responders through its local hero program and regular community fundraisers. The shop provides a standing 10% discount to first responders.
