Litchfield Park plans annual trout fishing derby

Posted

Litchfield Park officials are preparing to stock Tierra Verde Lake with hundreds of rainbow trout ahead of the city’s annual Trout Fishing Derby, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24.

The one-day event, hosted by the city’s Community and Recreation Services Department, is expected to attract up to 800 participants and spectators.

The fishing competition will be divided into two sessions, with residents choosing either a morning or afternoon time slot. Participants will compete in age-based categories, with trophies awarded for achievements such as the longest trout, shortest trout and most fish caught. Raffle prizes will also be available.

City officials describe the derby as a family-oriented event designed to promote outdoor recreation and use of city parks. Fishing licenses will not be required during the derby, though residents planning to fish after the event must have one.

Participants must register in advance online and bring their own fishing equipment.

Tierra Verde Lake Park, located at the intersection of Old Litchfield Road and Villa Nueva Drive, features a fishing dock, walking and biking paths, picnic areas and other amenities.

City staff encourage catch-and-release fishing for those not competing for prizes in an effort to support long-term fish sustainability.

Visit litchfieldpark.gov for more information or to register for the event.
