A team of students from BASIS Goodyear won first place in the junior division at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair over the weekend.
Students Emma Billhymer, Colston Duce-Romero and Charlemagne Rafaei developed a project examining the use of sound-absorbing paint to reduce classroom noise. The idea originated from their own experience with noise disruptions from neighboring classrooms.
The project focused on identifying a cost-effective method schools could use to improve classroom conditions.
The team also received recognition from the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a national program that highlights middle school science, technology, engineering and math projects.
The students worked under the guidance of teachers Zack Tran and Marcos Guillen.
The Arizona Science and Engineering Fair brings together top projects from school, district, county and regional competitions across Arizona. Students compete for prizes and scholarships at the annual event.
