Goodyear police host National Night Out

Posted

The Goodyear Police Department held its National Night Out Oct. 1, at the Goodyear Recreation Center, bringing together families and community members.

Established in 1984, National Night Out is an annual campaign designed to enhance police-community relations and increase awareness of crime prevention efforts. The event encourages communities across the United States to host activities that promote engagement between residents and local law enforcement.

“Tonight’s event is really to bring the community together. We’re introducing people to the officers that work in their areas and the equipment they work with. It’s a great way to interact with our community and it’s a great opportunity for us to get together,” said Public Information Sgt. Sean Tyler.

Booths included displays from different departments within the Goodyear Police Department like traffic control, and the special assignments unit seated next to miscellaneous booths from the Goodyear Fire Department, New Life Center, Nintendo and Prime IV and food trucks. Attendees could also enjoy an Amazon-sponsored raffle, learn about emergency communications and interact with local police. A petting zoo added to the family-friendly atmosphere.

Officers in uniform announced raffle winners, took pictures with community members and helped to pass out water to keep attendees hydrated.

Sergeant Andrew White staffed a booth that showcased forensic services and victim advocacy. White, who focuses on criminal investigations, said he was looking forward to community engagement outside of his specialization.

“We want people to know that we’re human beings like anybody else and we want you to approach us regardless and be able to be friendly and engage with us and count on us when you need us,” White said.

White’s booths, like many of the others, held crafts and informational pamphlets with officers who work in the topics they are teaching about ready to answer questions.

“People are interested in what we do and might know a little, based on TV shows, and some of it’s true and some of it is just Hollywood, but we want people to be able to ask questions and to know that these resources exist.” White said.

The evening featured public safety demonstrations, interactive activities, gifts for community members and food from local vendors.

Goodyear resident Makenzie Mark came to the event with her son and mother. Mark’s group was most excited to see the helicopter land and to watch the canine demonstrations.

“(Events like this) create less fear, especially for ‘the kiddos’,” Mark said. “Seeing people in uniform can really nurture future careers and keep them safe and comfortable asking for help.”

According to its website, The Goodyear Police Department emphasizes community policing, aiming to strengthen relationships between officers and residents. This approach includes crime prevention and public engagement, like National Night Out, ensuring that the community feels secure.

“We love what we do. We truly do this because we wanted to benefit society in the way that we could,” White said.

National Night Out provides community members the opportunity to connect with local law enforcement, learn about public safety strategies, and discuss ways to foster a safer environment.
