The Goodyear Police Department has announced that applications for its Citizens’ Police Academy are now open, running to Friday Nov. 1. This free program provides Goodyear residents with an opportunity to learn about local law enforcement operations.
The academy will take place from Tuesday, Nov. 5 to Thursday, Dec. 19, with classes scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 PM to 8 PM at 11 N. 145th Ave., the Goodyear Police Operations Building.
Participants will interact with police command staff and veteran officers, explore various police divisions, and observe training activities, including those involving K9 units. The curriculum will cover topics such as an overview of the police department, gangs and drug awareness, robbery and homicide investigations, sex crimes and forensics, DUI and traffic laws, tactical operations and S.W.A.T., police communications and dispatch, human trafficking awareness, school violence prevention, and volunteer opportunities.
Eligibility requirements for applicants include being at least 18 years old, and have had no prior felony arrests or misdemeanor arrests in the past five years. A background check will be conducted for all applicants.
Graduation from the academy requires participants to attend at least 4 out of 6 sessions, complete a 5-hour ride-along with an officer, and observe a 4-hour shift in Dispatch.
Classes are limited to 25 participants per session, so early application is encouraged.
