Goodyear hospital introduces new technology for biliary procedures

Posted

Abrazo West Campus has implemented the SpyGlass Discover Digital Catheter, a device designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of complex biliary conditions, according to hospital officials.

Dr. Ali Alshati, a gastroenterologist at Abrazo West, said the device enhances visualization, which can aid in more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning.

“In many situations, it does increase diagnosis sensitivity up to 70% compared to a much lower percentage achieved by previously known traditional diagnostic modalities,” Alshati said.

The catheter is used to identify and fragment stones, as well as diagnose tumors within the bile ducts, tasks that have traditionally been challenging in gastroenterology. The single-use design also eliminates the need for reprocessing, which may reduce the risk of cross-contamination, Alshati said.

Hans Driessnack, CEO of Abrazo West Campus, said the addition of the new technology reflects the hospital’s focus on providing advanced care in the West Valley.

“The continued investment by Abrazo West in advanced medical equipment gives our medical staff the technology to help our patients and provide high acuity care right here in the West Valley,” Driessnack said.
