Goodyear community marks 9/11 anniversary

Posted

The Goodyear community gathered to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The ceremony, hosted by the Goodyear Fire Department, began with a flag-raising by the local honor guard. A large U.S. flag was displayed from the ladder of a Goodyear fire truck as a reminder of the nation’s resilience.

Acting Goodyear Fire Chief Tim Wayne addressed the crowd, noting the significance of the flag as a symbol.

“Moments ago, the honor guard raised our country’s colors into the morning sky,” Wayne said. “It’s a reminder of what those colors stand for: freedom, resilience, and unity. These qualities carried our country through one of its darkest days, September 11, 2001.”

Wayne also spoke about the unity that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks.

“We carry forward the strength to take the passion that rose in those days, when strangers became family, neighbors looked out for one another, and our country stood shoulder to shoulder,” he said. “That same spirit continues here in Goodyear.”

Goodyear Police Chief Brian Issitt also addressed the crowd, reflecting on the tragic loss of life that day.

“Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost that day, but even amid the devastation, we witnessed something extraordinary: a triumph of human courage, compassion, and selflessness,” Issitt said.

He added that the actions of first responders continue to inspire.

“Today, we remember not just the tragedy, but the bravery, not just the loss, but the love. The legacy of these heroes inspires us all to serve, to care, and to be a little braver, a little kinder, even when no one is watching.”

Following the ceremony, dozens of community members came together for a breakfast and with proceeds going twards United Goodyear Firefighter Charities, where donations are still being accepted. The event provided an opportunity for reflection and for the community to support one another and give back.
