Goodyear is launching a comprehensive update to its zoning ordinance, the city’s rulebook for land use and development. While portions of the ordinance have been amended over the years, the last full update was in 1999.
The update aims to align the ordinance with the city’s General Plan, simplify its use, support new development, protect existing neighborhoods, and preserve Goodyear’s natural and visual character. It will also address changes in state and federal law, outdated standards and community concerns such as housing affordability and water conservation.
The city is encouraging public participation throughout the process. The first community workshop will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the Goodyear Recreation Campus, 420 Estrella Parkway.
Zoning ordinances determine how land can be used residentially, commercially or industrially and regulate factors such as building height, parking and signage. While zoning standards may be updated, existing zoning designations will not change unless requested by a property owner.
