The Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission held its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Goodyear City Hall.
The Arts and Culture Commission advises the Goodyear City Council on arts-related matters, such as public art, supporting local artists, arts education, and organizing cultural events. The Commission works to connect the community and reflect the diverse interests of Goodyear residents.
The meeting began with the swearing-in of new commissioners Jerry Drake, Carole Palmer, and Rosalind Robinson. The new members were formally inducted by Jasmine Pernicano, Goodyear's interim city clerk.
Palmer is a 15-year Goodyear resident, who says she is passionate about theatre and music. She holds a master’s degree in Theatre from Cal State Northridge and is active in the PebbleCreek ShowTime Productions, both as a performer and director.
Drake is a retired music educator who brings experience in music and directing. After retiring in 2016, he became the director of the PebbleCreek Singers. He holds a bachelor’s in music and a master’s in music education.
Robinson has a background in arts education and program development, Robinson says her focus is on making the arts accessible to the community.
“Your time is your gift to the city. that is your energy and showing up in spaces and committing to the arts and culture of Goodyear. That is what you bring to the table, so I hope that you come with the same passion and excitement," Paulos said. “I really look forward to another year together and to seeing these new faces on the board.”
The commission also appointed members to subcommittees. Commissioner Robinson provided updates on current arts programs, while newly appointed Vice Chairman Nancy Love shared details on upcoming events. The Commission discussed upcoming cultural events including Jazz in the Park, 5-8 p.m. Feb. 15, at Goodyear Civic Square. The event will feature live jazz music, art activities, and food from local vendors.
The Commission's next session is planned for Tuesday, March 11.
