Goodyear and Litchfield Park observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Posted

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed on the third Monday in January, honors the life and work of the Civil Rights Movement leader.

This year it is held on Monday, Jan. 20. According to the U.S. Government Publishing Office, the holiday serves as both a reflection on his contributions to racial equality and a reminder of the ongoing efforts toward social justice in the United States.

In Goodyear, city offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. However, trash, recycling, and bulk pickup services will continue as usual.

In Litchfield Park, Waste Management services will be delayed by one day during the week of Jan. 20. Regular service will resume the following week.

The following school districts will be closed on January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

  • Auga Fria Union High School District
  • Liberty Elementary School District
  • Litchfield Elementary School District

Various events and activities will take place in observance of Dr. King's life and work across Arizona. These include community service projects, educational programs, and public gatherings.

Visit city and school district websites for more information on closures.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is part of a broader tradition of federal holidays that recognize significant moments in U.S. history, such as Labor Day and Memorial Day. These holidays highlight the contributions of various groups that have played a role in shaping the nation.

The day encourages reflection on progress made in racial equality and acknowledges the work that continues. According to the United States Government Publishing Office, many individuals and organizations use the holiday to participate in service projects, community events, and educational activities, promoting the values of justice, equality, and community engagement.
