Focus Comics held a ceremony Friday, Dec. 13 to honor 30 local firefighters from Maricopa County, celebrating their dedication and service with a Sabers Awards Ceremony and art exhibition at Rural Metro Fire Station 837 in Litchfield Park.
The event, which drew first responders, community leaders, and members of the public, featured portraits of the honorees created by award-winning artist Yvonne Wan.
Wan, a certified social-cultural anthropologist and founder of Focus Comics, is known for using her art to support autistic and special needs children. In addition to Wan’s work, the exhibition included artwork from her autistic students, who contributed tribute pieces to the firefighters.
The ceremony began with a presentation of colors by the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard, followed by a live performance of the National Anthem by USAF Airman Gabe Howell. Each firefighter received a portrait and a Certificate of Honor, signed by Thomas Schoaf the Mayor of Litchfield Park. Three firefighters were presented with the Focus Comics Living Legends Trophy, while two others received the Focus Comics Public Service Trophy.
The awards recognized their exceptional service and leadership. The 30 firefighters honored at the event included representatives from Luke Air Force Base, Rural Metro Fire, Sun City Fire Medical, Tempe Fire and Goodyear Fire Department.
In addition to the firefighter portraits, the exhibition showcased 17 traditional watercolor paintings, 13 digital artworks, and a large acrylic canvas measuring 29.5 x 39.5 inches.
Artwork by Focus Comics intern Ezekiel Cook, a young artist with autism, was also featured and available for purchase on coffee bags to support local heroes and Focus Comics' free art programs for autistic and special needs children. The event was filmed and photographed, ensuring attendees could remember the special day.
Focus Comics encouraged the public to show their support for both the firefighters and the young artists who contributed to the exhibition. Founded by Wan, Focus Comics is an award-winning superhero comic series that champions neurodiversity and inclusion. The organization helps autistic and special needs individuals by offering free art camps, internships, and community outreach programs across Maricopa County.
