County officials prepare residents for virus season.

As respiratory virus activity rises across Arizona, Maricopa County health officials are reminding Goodyear residents to take precautions during the fall and winter illness season.
According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health viruses such as influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus spread more easily in cooler months. Activity typically increases in November, peaks from December through February, and tapers off by spring.
The county recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive both a flu vaccine and an updated COVID-19 vaccine each year. According to MCDPH, people 50 and older, those who are pregnant, and caregivers of infants under 19 months should ask a health care provider about the RSV vaccine.
“Respiratory viruses can cause severe disease, especially in infants, young children, and older adults,” stated Dr. Nick Staab, medical epidemiologist at MCDPH. “Staying up-to-date on flu and COVID-19 vaccines is a simple way to prevent infections, reduce the spread of respiratory illness and prevent severe disease,”
Health experts say vaccines reduce the likelihood of severe illness, hospitalization and complications, particularly for older adults, young children and people with underlying conditions.
Free childhood immunizations are offered at the West Valley Children’s Immunization Clinic, 14130 W. McDowell Road in Goodyear, adult immunizations are available in a clinic in Phoenix. For appointments or help finding vaccines visit dignityhealth.org.
