Phoenix-based artist Antoinette Cauley, known for large-scale portraits that explore identity, race and resilience, will headline an upcoming After Hours Art Talk in Goodyear.
Cauley’s work often centers Black youth and draws from Black American hood culture with a feminist perspective. Using color and contemporary symbolism, she states she examines representation and challenges longstanding narratives within art institutions.
Born and raised in Phoenix, Cauley studied fine art with an emphasis in painting at Mesa Community College and completed a two-year apprenticeship with oil painter Chris Saper. She is recognized in the Valley for her nine-story mural of writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin in downtown Phoenix.
Cauley recently completed a three-year artist residency in Berlin, Germany, before returning to Arizona, where she now works from her studio in Mesa.
The After Hours Art Talk, recently rebranded from the Hot Coffee Art Lecture Series, is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 1900 N. Civic Square in Goodyear.
During the lecture, Cauley will discuss her artistic development, including how her upbringing in South Phoenix and her time abroad have shaped her perspective on art and her hometown.
