ADOT launches accommodations for drivers and first responders

Posted

The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division has expanded its voluntary Communication Accommodation program, introducing new digital features designed to improve interactions between motorists and first responders during traffic stops and emergencies.

The program allows individuals with disabilities or communication challenges to add a confidential digital indicator to their driver license or vehicle records. When law enforcement officers check a license plate, VIN, or driver license number, a "Communication Accommodation" alert appears on their screen, signaling that an occupant may respond differently or need additional time to communicate.

Under the newly launched system updates, account holders can now complete a 500-character digital text box on both driver and vehicle records to detail specific information unique to their needs. The update also adds a dedicated emergency contact field, accessible exclusively to first responders responding to an incident, and interactive toggle switches allowing users to activate or deactivate alerts at any time.

Developed in partnership with the non-profit organization Preston's Pursuit for Acceptance to enhance state statutory guidelines, the feature aims to foster safer, more informed interactions during high-stress situations. The indicator is completely voluntary, free of charge, and strictly confidential, meaning it will not appear on a physical driver license, state ID, or public motor vehicle record.
