The Wildlife World Zoo has announced the birth of a baby colobus monkey, its newest addition to its collection of animals.
Colobus monkeys, native to the forests and grasslands of Central Africa, are known for their long, fluffy tails and distinctive black-and-white fur. These herbivores feed on leaves, fruits, and flowers and play an important role in seed dispersal. However, they face threats in the wild from habitat loss and hunting.
The baby colobus monkey, born with a pink face and white fur, will gradually develop the characteristic black-and-white coloration as it matures. Visitors can see the young monkey alongside the adult Colobus monkeys near the zoo's East entrance.
According to the African Wildlife Foundation, colobus monkeys live in small, social groups, typically led by a dominant male, with females remaining in their birth groups for life. Young monkeys are cared for by their mothers and other group members. As the infant grows, it will become more active and engaged with its family.
The Wildlife World Zoo, 16501 W. Northern Avenue in Litchfield Park, spans over 100 acres and is home to more than 600 species of animals.
The zoo is open year-round, offering educational experiences for visitors of all ages. Visit wildlifeworld.com for more information on hours, admission, and upcoming events.
