The West Valley Astronomy Club is inviting families and skywatchers of all ages to experience the beauty of the cosmos at its upcoming Star Party, set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Goodyear Civic Square.

Held in partnership with the Georgia T. Lord Library, the free event will bring high-powered telescopes and experienced astronomers to the park stage at 1900 N. Civic Square. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to relax and enjoy live jazz music under the stars while observing celestial wonders.

The Star Party will feature views of the moon, planets, galaxies, star clusters and more. Telescopes will be provided by West Valley Astronomy Club members, who will be on hand to answer questions and guide attendees through the night sky.

Founded in 1986 and currently based at the Beardsley Recreation Center, the club offers public outreach events throughout the West Valley, including at schools, libraries and public parks. Its monthly Star Parties are open to the public, free of charge, and don’t require telescope ownership or club membership to attend.

Participants are asked to follow Star Party etiquette to ensure the best possible experience for all. That includes using red lights sparingly, avoiding flash photography, watching your step in the dark, and asking before touching any telescope equipment.

“Astronomy is for everyone,” the club states on its website. “Even professional astronomers are always learning. Asking questions and exploring the night sky together is what makes these events special.”
