St. Peter’s Montessori has been recognized as the first Montessori school in Arizona to earn the Purple Star School designation, honoring its commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.
The recognition was announced Aug. 27 in partnership with the Arizona Purple Star School Program and Luke Air Force Base.
“Arizona Purple Star Schools are military-friendly schools who are dedicated to support students and families as they navigate challenges of military life, specifically during transitions and deployments,” said Samuel Smith, school liaison program manager at Luke Air Force Base. “This recognition not only highlights their commitment to serving military families but enhances the resources and support available within the community.”
Founded in 1964, St. Peter’s Montessori has a 60-year history in the West Valley. It offers multi-age classrooms, Spanish immersion programs and Episcopal religious programming.
“The Purple Star Program and the Montessori pedagogy complement each other in that both are child centered focused,” said David Yanez, St. Peter’s school liaison and veteran. “It is our goal that no child feels alone whenever they face the anxiety when a parent has to be away from home regardless of military affiliation.”
To receive the designation, schools must demonstrate ongoing efforts to meet the needs of military families, including specialized staff training, providing a student liaison program, making resources available to families, and incorporating military recognition throughout the school year.
The Arizona Department of Education launched the Purple Star School program to honor schools that provide transition support for students with parents serving in the armed forces. Designated schools display the Purple Star logo, certificate and banner as a visible commitment to serving military families.
