The Litchfield Elementary School District officially broke ground on its 17th campus, Troy Gilbert Elementary School, during a ceremony held May 5 at the intersection of Perryville Road and Glendale Avenue.
The event brought together district officials, community members, and future students to commemorate the start of construction on the new school, which is set to open in August 2026 for the 2026–27 academic year.
The school is named in honor of U.S. Air Force Major Troy Gilbert, an F-16 pilot who died in 2006 during a mission near Baghdad, Iraq. Gilbert, a father of five and a former LESD79 parent, was stationed at nearby Luke Air Force Base. Two of his children attended Corte Sierra Elementary School.
“We are proud to name our newest school after an American hero whose selfless service and commitment to our country reflect the values that resonate in our school district and are seen in the characteristics of the Litchfield Learner,” said district Superintendent Dr. Carter Davidson.
District officials said the name was selected following an inclusive process that incorporated community input.
“After reviewing community feedback, we had two worthy candidate namesakes,” said Principal Luke Jankee. “However, we are honored to move forward with Troy Gilbert Elementary School. His name embodies the characteristics of excellence, service, and integrity that LESD79 strives to instill in our students.”
Construction on the new campus will continue over the next year, with plans now turning to school identity development, including the design of the Aviators mascot.
LESD79 officials said the new school will serve not only as a site for academic learning, but also as a symbol of the district’s shared values and connection to the broader West Valley community.
