GSQ to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night

Posted

The public is invited to explore the wonders of the night sky during International Observe the Moon Night, a global event hosted locally at Goodyear Civic Square Park Stage.

The event, held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, is free to attend and open to all ages. Hosted locally by the West Valley Astronomy Club in partnership with the Georgia T. Lord Library, 1900 N. Civic Square in Goodyear, the stargazing event is part of an annual worldwide initiative aimed at promoting appreciation and understanding of the Moon and its role in planetary science and exploration.

Attendees will have the chance to view the Moon, planets, galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae through high-powered telescopes operated by experienced club astronomers. No telescope or club membership is required to participate.

“Astronomy is for everyone,” the club states on its website. “Even professional astronomers are always learning. Asking questions and exploring the night sky together is what makes these events special.”

In addition to celestial views, visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to relax under the stars and enjoy live jazz music at the park stage.

Founded in 1986 and based at the Beardsley Recreation Center, the West Valley Astronomy Club frequently hosts public outreach events throughout the West Valley, including at schools, libraries, and community parks.

To ensure the best possible experience, participants are asked to follow Star Party etiquette, including using red lights sparingly, avoiding flash photography, watching their step in the dark, and asking permission before handling telescope equipment.
