Goodyear Police host a summer teen academy

The Goodyear Police Department is accepting applications for its 2025 Teen Police Academy Training (TPAT), a four-day summer program designed for high school students interested in law enforcement and criminal justice.

The academy will take place June 9-12, running Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goodyear Police Department Operations Building, 11 N. 145th Avenue.

Participants will receive instruction from Goodyear police officers on a variety of topics, including crime scene processing, firearms safety, traffic enforcement, SWAT and Special Assignment Unit operations, K9 demonstrations, and drug recognition.

To be eligible, applicants must be between 14 and 18 years old, currently enrolled in high school, not including incoming freshmen, and in good academic standing or have graduated in 2025. A background check and interview will be conducted to determine eligibility. Students with significant or violent criminal histories or gang affiliations will not be considered. Minor infractions may not automatically disqualify an applicant.

The cost of the program is $65, which covers a required academy polo shirt and graduation expenses. Payment must be made by check or money order to the Goodyear Police Department. Applicants must also submit a 250-word essay outlining their interest in the program and what they’ve done to prepare for it, as well as a copy of their medical insurance card.

All materials must be submitted together by the deadline Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 5 p.m. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Space in the academy is limited, and early registration is encouraged.
