Goodyear Police awarded grant for ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign

Posted

The Goodyear Police Department has received a $6,000 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to support the national Click It or Ticket campaign.

The funding will allow for additional officer coverage and overtime enforcement during the high-visibility seat belt enforcement period from May 19 to June 1, 2025.

The enforcement effort aligns with the Memorial Day holiday travel season and is part of a nationwide campaign led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to increase seat belt use and reduce traffic fatalities. Officers will take a zero-tolerance approach to seat belt and child safety seat violations, with enforcement planned for both daytime and nighttime hours.

According to NHTSA, unrestrained passenger vehicle fatalities are more likely to occur at night, and males are statistically less likely to wear seat belts than females. In 2023, 23,959 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes nationwide, and nearly half were not wearing seat belts. NHTSA estimates that 14,955 lives were saved by seat belts in 2017, and that more than 2,500 additional lives could have been saved if everyone had buckled up.

The Goodyear Police Department encourages all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts every time they are in a vehicle, regardless of seating position or trip length.

The Click It or Ticket campaign is one of many programs supported by the Arizona Highway Safety Plan, which is administered by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The office provides leadership and funding for enforcement, education, and public awareness initiatives aimed at reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Arizona roads.
