Goodyear honors deputy chief’s retirement after 30 years of service

Posted

At the Goodyear City Council meeting on Feb. 24, the city recognized Deputy Chief Jeff Mercy for his retirement after 30 years of service with the Goodyear Police Department.

“I am so proud of Jeff,” said Goodyear Police Chief Brian Issitt. “I could not be more proud of all of the accomplishments that Jeff has made and the mark he has left on our police department.”

Mercy first moved to Goodyear in 1982 and graduated from Agua Fria High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grand Canyon University and a master’s degree in counseling from Northern Arizona University.

“It’s such an honor to be here tonight. It’s been an honor to have worked for such a supportive and awesome council and such a great city,” said Mercy.

Mercy also thanked his family for their consistent support throughout his career.

Councilmember Laura Kaino said, “It’s a huge blessing to see someone finish their law enforcement career physically, emotionally, and spiritually intact. Thank you for your years of service. Go do great things.”

Mercy joined the department in 1994 and worked in several divisions, including Patrol, Narcotics, Training, and SWAT.

“Your time serving Goodyear may be coming to an end, but your impact on this city will continue on, that’s for certain,” said Councilmember Trey Terry.

Im addition to his work with the police department, Mercy works to shape the community by coaching the soccer team at Millennium High School.

“ We have been friends for so many years, long before I came on council, and I just remember how helpful, how thoughtful and caring you’ve been for this city and all of its residents. We just can’t thank you enough and your precious family who shared you with us,” said Wally Campbell, Goodyear’s vice mayor. “Thak you Jeff for being such an example that we wish everyone would follow. Good luck to you, dear.”
