The Scottsdale Police Department has released a graphic video of the shooting that occurred and injured an officer earlier this month as authorities were trying to serve a search warrant.

The officer-involved shooting happened about 7:07 p.m. Jan. 6 at an apartment near First Avenue and Roosevelt Street in downtown Phoenix.

Detectives from the department’s special assignment unit were attempting to serve a search warrant on Kenneth Hearne, 37, related to a sexual assault at the San Marin Apartments in Scottsdale on Oct. 12. Hearne also had an arrest warrant out of the City of Mesa, police said.

“Detectives on the scene made contact on the second floor of the apartment with a female and a child, who were safely removed from the apartment,” police said in a statement when the video was released Jan. 27.

“A male was observed in the apartment and was later identified as the person wanted for the search warrant, Kenneth Hearne.”

Detectives told Hearne to come out of the apartment with nothing in his hands so they could serve the search warrant.

Hearne refused commands and was seen hiding in a hallway close to the entrance of the apartment, police said.

A “viewing device” was tossed into the apartment, “and that’s when Kenneth Hearne began firing at detectives, striking Sergeant (Scott) Galbraith, who was behind a wall from the entrance. A detective returned fire, and it was unknown at that time if Hearne was struck,” police said in the statement.

It is believed Hearne left the apartment out of a rear accessway on the second story.

The investigation was turned over to the Phoenix Police Department once Hearne left the apartment.

Hearne was shot and arrested by Phoenix police on Jan. 7. He later died in a hospital.

Galbraith is recovering from his injuries.
