Surprise students shop with cops for holiday cheer

Mavericks provide funds to serve underprivileged at DUSD

Nearly 30 Dysart Unified School District students are having a brighter holiday season thanks to the Surprise Police Department and the West Valley Mavericks Foundation.

The police department’s annual Shop with a Cop event Dec. 6 at Kohl’s treated more than two dozen local students to coffee at Gathered Grounds and breakfast at Macayo’s before embarking on a $150 shopping spree at the Kohl’s location at 14020 W. Bell Road.

“Our officers had an absolute blast,” the department wrote on its official Facebook page. “There were big smiles, full carts and maybe even a few friendly debates about which superhero is actually the best.”

The West Valley Mavericks provides the shopping spree each year to bring holiday cheer to underprivileged kids by pairing them with officers.

Santa also made an appearance at Kohl’s, arriving in style via a military tank.

The police department called it a “heart-warming tradition” in its Facebook post, and it thanked community partners for helping present the event.

“You’re the real MVPs,” the department wrote.
