Detention facility tensions again dominate Surprise Council meeting

Residents press officials for answers as project remains tied up in court

When the Surprise City Council returned to City Hall from its summer break on Aug. 4, opposition to the proposed ICE detention facility in Surprise was back in full force.

More than six months after the city of Surprise announced it had become aware of plans for a proposed U.S. Department of Homeland Security processing center, residents are still demanding answers while the project remains in limbo amid an ongoing lawsuit filed by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes.

That frustration was on display this week when roughly 50 residents packed the Council Chambers, many hoping to speak about the proposed ICE detention facility despite it not appearing on the meeting agenda.
