OPINION — In her Dec. 3 letter, “Reader responds to Morrison letter,” Katharine Hanson characterizes Connie Morrison’s concerns as “hyperbolic and unsubstantiated,” yet offers no evidence to refute them — only reframing and deflection.
Funding for cancer research is not an abstraction to those affected by it. Pediatric cancer research funding has been reduced or reallocated in recent years, and public concern over such decisions is neither melodramatic nor cruel — it is civic engagement.
Questioning policy outcomes is a cornerstone of democratic discourse, not evidence of irrational outrage.
Ms. Hanson suggests that criticism of domestic policies somehow diminishes concern for war victims or global peace. This is a false choice. Americans are capable of caring about multiple moral issues simultaneously.
Supporting diplomacy abroad does not negate responsibility for protecting vulnerable populations at home.
The same applies to SNAP. Raising concerns about reductions or restrictions to food assistance programs is not an accusation of fraud denial or fiscal naïveté. It reflects concern for real people—elderly individuals, disabled residents, veterans, and children — who rely on these programs to meet basic needs. Efficiency and compassion are not mutually exclusive.
Finally, disagreement with a president’s policies does not equate to “despising all things Trump.” It is possible — and necessary — to evaluate leadership critically, regardless of party. Civil discussion does not require silence, and lowering the political temperature does not mean suspending accountability.
Respectful disagreement is not the problem. Dismissing sincere concerns as hysteria is.
