In her Nov. 26 letter, Response to Goncalves letter, Connie Morrison fanned political friction by making hyperbolic and unsubstantiated claims against President Trump. She stated that she “would be thrilled if President Trump would cure cancer,” but purported that instead he “slashed funding” for cancer research.
She declared, “the utter cruelty of this administration is unconscionable.” Is her “thrill” reserved only for saving the lives of cancer victims, but not for war victims? As with cancer, war causes death, pain and heartache and President Trump’s actions have ended several conflicts. Does that count for nothing when one despises all things Trump?
In addition, Ms. Morrison went on to mention the “SNAP punishment” and “other direct assaults on the American people.” All melodramatic claims with no supporting evidence or specifics, in my opinion. Rational thought would consider the possibility of fraud, abuse or waste in research and aid funding and therefore, necessitating the implementation of more effective and efficient methods of funding.
Finally, spending more tax money does not equate with better outcomes, nor does cutting funding equate with worse outcomes. It is naive to correlate funding cuts with “cruelty.”
Civil and constructive discussions are unlikely with those who devolve into selective outrage over anything involving President Trump.
