Blessing of the animals is affirmation of God’s love for all, even the tiniest of animals and birds. The tradition of Blessing of the Animals harks back to the 13th Century and attributed to St. Francis of Assisi and is practiced around the world. It is an acknowledgement of how central to life our animals are; they are the essence of our being, the spiritual core of our souls, the feeling of being at peace with the universe.
So, it is no wonder that churches here in Sun City also embrace the tradition and at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, Unity Spiritual Center at 10101 W. Coggins will celebrate “The Feast of St. Francis”.
“Our flower-filled garden offers benches around our fountain for quiet reflection,” Rev. Sharon Connors, senior pastor at the church said. “Remember, our pets are our most cherished and prized friends.”
So, take a moment and reflect on that special bond you have with your furry and feathered friends. Connors will bless each of those pets with sacred oil of Frankincense and Myrrh and each owner will receive a Pet Blessing Prayer.
All pets are welcome, but all need to be on a leash or in a traveling home. So, bring your puppy or your dog, your kitty or you cat. If you have a pet snake or a frisky ferret, bring them too. All are welcome. Photos of pets can also be used during the blessing. Pet food or treat donations will be accepted and given to a local animal shelter.
