By Rudy Grom - American Legion Post 94
The Quilt Posse is a Club of 30 women from local area communities who meet twice monthly in the Sun City West Foundation Grand Canyon Room.
While the club meets socially, they do discuss ideas and share information about quilting, a passion of all the members. Additionally, they plan their projects, which involve creating quilts, usually with a specific theme, which are then donated to various nonprofit organizations for distribution to local in-need residents.
Just more than a year ago, 13 of the members decided to create quilts with a patriotic theme to be given to war veterans. Each quilter would create 13 similar blocks of their own design, which would be integrated into the final 13 quilts. The 13 quilters all had direct ties to a veteran, such as an immediate family member or relative or friend. As they all expressed, this project over the last year was truly a labor of love, knowing the quilts would be given to deserving veterans. Recently, all 13 quilts, plus an additional one, were completed and presented to the Sun City West American Legion Post 94.
Then, Post 94 gave the quilts to Korean War veterans as the intended recipients for these magnificent quilts, all truly patriotic works of art. July 27 marked the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War armistice, formally ending the war in Korea.
