Students are back in class at Florence High School this morning after a swarm of “aggressive” bees on campus Monday morning caused the kids to be sent home and the school to shut down.
“The bees have been exterminated. FHS is back to normal today,” said Rita Ann Reznik, director of public relations for the Florence Unified School District.
The school dismissed the students between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. on Monday “out of an abundance of caution due to an aggressive hive of bees that have been swarming the campus. Florence Fire Department is on site to handle the hive, but the bees are beginning to become active and agitated again, therefore students will be dismissed,” according to a Florence Unified School District Facebook post.
District transportation picked up all bus riders at 10:30 a.m. Students who drove to school were released to their vehicles at 10:15 a.m. Students who normally walk to school were released at the far end of the campus, the post stated.
Meanwhile, students who needed to be picked up by a parent or guardian were accompanied by a school administrator while waiting for their rides under the FHS marquee at the corner of Main Street.
In addition, the FHS Facebook page posted that cheer, football and cross-country practices had been cancelled.
Finally, the FHS volleyball games for the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams scheduled at the school for Monday were moved to the Florence K-8 gym at 225 S. Orlando St.
