Volunteers sought for Gilbert 9/11 Day of Service projects

Posted

The town of Gilbert is participating in the 9/11 National Day of Service this September, offering residents a variety of volunteer opportunities and donation drives to honor those lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and recognize the acts of service and heroism that followed.

Volunteer opportunities are available for people of all ages and abilities. Projects include assembling hygiene kits, helping seniors with yard work, writing encouraging notes and collecting donated supplies.

On Sept. 11, the town will host several community service projects, including backstop pad detailing at Cactus Yards, a patio makeover at the Southeast Regional Library, a garden refresh at the Community Center, and litter pickup, weed removal and bird blind painting at the Riparian Preserve.

A donation drive for Senior Bingo prizes is also planned.

Project times and participation requirements vary.

A 9/11 Service Fair is scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza, 50 E. Civic Center Drive, Gilbert, before the evening memorial ceremony. Hosted by JustServe, the event will feature approximately 10 local nonprofit organizations offering hands-on service projects for children and families. No registration is required.

On Sept. 12, volunteers will be able to assist Gilbert residents facing financial or physical challenges through the Day of Service to Seniors.

Projects are scheduled from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and may include light yard work, indoor household tasks, donation pickups and basic home maintenance activities such as changing light bulbs and air filters.

Additional information and volunteer registration are available through the town’s volunteer program and JustServe.
