A new public art installation at HD South is showcasing artwork created by Jack Wingo, a participant in the town of Gilbert’s Native American Management Internship program.
The piece, titled “For The People,” is part of Gilbert’s Community Canvas program, which displays public art throughout the Heritage District.
The work depicts a fancy shawl dancer inspired by Wingo’s niece and incorporates imagery drawn from tribal traditions, the natural landscape and Indigenous cultural symbolism.
According to Gilbert, the artwork required about 130 hours to complete. The dancer’s face was intentionally left blank to allow Native girls and women to see themselves reflected in the piece.
The Native American Management Internship program is a partnership between Gilbert and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. It provides students interested in government, American Indian studies and business leadership with exposure to public service and municipal operations.
The installation is open to the public at HD South. Visitors also can explore additional public art locations through Gilbert’s interactive art map.
