A Higley Unified School District teacher has been named a Best Buddies Arizona Champion of the Year candidate as part of a statewide effort to raise funds and awareness for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Brittany Yanov teaches in the Higley Transition & Access Program, a one-year program that helps special education students prepare for employment after high school with support from vocational rehabilitation services.
Yanov has been involved with Best Buddies Arizona for a decade, beginning as an adviser at Higley High School. The organization provides opportunities for friendship, leadership and employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
As a Champion of the Year candidate, Yanov is participating in a fundraising and awareness campaign to support Best Buddies Arizona programs across the state. She is joined in the effort by former student Jaden Hawks.
The campaign runs through Oct. 14 and encourages community members to contribute to programs that help participants build relationships, develop workplace skills and increase independence.
Funds raised through the campaign will support Best Buddies Arizona's friendship, leadership and employment initiatives.
