Gilbert Public Schools campuses across Gilbert and Mesa marked the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a series of service projects, ceremonies and community events designed to honor those who lost their lives and recognize the contributions of first responders.
Students, families, staff members, local businesses and community volunteers participated in activities that included campus beautification projects, garden restoration, agricultural preparation, care kit assembly, educational programs and school assemblies.
District officials said the events were intended to bring community members together through service while helping students learn about the significance of Sept. 11.
At Desert Ridge High School, more than 1,600 volunteers participated in the campus's third annual Day of Service. Activities included assembling care packages and supporting an American Red Cross blood drive.
Carol Rae Ranch Elementary School hosted a morning assembly featuring local first responders, parents and community members. The school has held a commemorative event recognizing Sept. 11 each year since 2002.
Oak Tree Elementary School and Mesquite Elementary School partnered with JustServe volunteers to revitalize campus garden beds used for outdoor learning programs.
District leaders said community involvement plays an important role in supporting campuses and strengthening connections between schools and residents.
Volunteers contributed in a variety of ways, including landscaping projects, assembling supplies and participating in student activities.
The events were part of a broader effort by Gilbert Public Schools to use service-based activities as a way to commemorate Sept. 11 while encouraging civic engagement among students and community members.
