Gilbert High student recognized for welding project

Posted

Ryan Fifield, a junior at Gilbert High School, has earned the distinguished Silver Award in the high school welding project division at the J.F. Lincoln Foundation’s national competition.

The honor places him among the top three high school students in the United States for his exceptional welding skills and innovative design.

As a student in GHS's Agriscience Engineering and Fabrication 2 class, Fifield designed and built a John Deere-themed swing set, which impressed judges for its creative concept and high-quality craftsmanship.

His project not only secured him national recognition but also earned him a $750 cash prize and two welding machines to further his development as a young welder.

In addition to the Silver Award, Fifield’s swing set was successfully auctioned off at the Maricopa County Fair Agriculture Mechanics Show, fetching $1,800. The sale reflects the strong demand for his work and the high regard for his welding abilities in the local community.

The swing set itself was built from scratch, with Fifield designing and fabricating work, while only the hardware and seats were purchased.

Looking ahead, Fifield plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering, using the skills he has developed in welding and fabrication as a foundation for his future goals.
