are celebrating Día De Los Muertos with a free community event
The celebration is set to take place Sunday, Nov. 2, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Center for the Arts, according to a news release.
This traditional and immersive cultural community event honors and remembers loved ones through a community altar, live music, traditional dance and art activities.
The event is presented in partnership with the Cultural Coalition featuring acclaimed mask and puppet maker Zarco Guerrero. Admission is free.
Guests of all ages might enjoy an afternoon of creativity and cultural experiences, including:
• Mask Making (3 p.m.) – Create your own Día de los Muertos paper mask with free supplies and instruction provided.
• Ballet Folklórico Performances (3:30 p.m.) – Experience two vibrant dances by Ballet Folklórico Primavera: La Danza de los Viejito dance from Michoacán and La Mascarade, inspired by Aztec movement and ceremony.
• Calaca Puppets (4:30 p.m.) – Marvel at towering nine-foot skeleton puppets, handcrafted by Zarco Guerrero and animated by the Cultural Coalition, as they roam the lobby, offering photo opportunities and adding to the lively procession.
• Procession & Axé Capoeira (5:30 p.m.) – Join in a powerful 20-minute procession featuring calaca-masked drummers and an exhilarating capoeira demonstration.
• Face Painting (3:30 p.m.) Families can enjoy free face painting, with traditional calavera (sugar skull) designs that honor departed loved ones and celebrate the colorful spirit of Día de los Muertos.
• Community Altar - Designed by visual artist Edgar Fernandez, this ofrenda invites families to share photos, mementos, and offerings in remembrance of loved ones, honoring the central tradition of Día de los Muertos.
Following the community festivities, guests are invited to a special ticketed performance by singer-songwriter Edna Vazquez at 7 p.m. on the Chandler Center for the Arts Steena Murray Mainstage. Tickets start at $32.
A singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Edna Vazquez is known for her voice and passionate performances that transcend borders, the release states.
